Abstract

This article analyzes agricultural and pastoral dynamics in the urban periphery of Mbandaka (DRC), with a focus on family farming. It examines socio-environmental issues, land pressures, agro-pastoral conflicts, land degradation, and local responses. The results show a growing tension between agricultural uses and urbanization, exacerbated by a lack of infrastructure, a clear land policy, and unsustainable practices. The issue of family farming concerns all social strata, men and women alike, especially the working population. To achieve these results, we used the experimental method, which relies on documentary review techniques, field observations, and semi-structured interviews with farmers, local officials, and development actors based on a pre-established research protocol. The analysis was based on an interdisciplinary approach combining social, economic, land, and ecological dimensions. The study offers a comprehensive overview of avenues for integrated and sustainable management of these resources (soil, soil, hydrology, geomorphology, and forestry) related to agro-pastoral activities or exploitation.
